Generally, green discharge indicates Vaginal trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection causing by the Trichomonas vaginalis parasite, which is commonly known as a vaginal parasite infection. 

It can also be a symptom of gonorrhea or bacterial vaginosis. It’s advisable to see a doctor for an accurate diagnosis and medication.

If you notice abnormal discharge, first you can start taking basic self-care or even changing some habits as follows:

  1. Avoid certain Foods While you can still eat as preferred, keep in mind some foods that could worsen or affect your vaginal health, such as sugary foods, pickled items and high-fat foods.

  2. Avoid sex If you encounter an unusual discharge, it's highly advisable to avoid sex until the conditions improve. Having sex could pass infections to and from the vagina. In case you can't avoid it, always use a condom.

  3. Keep the intimate area clean Clean the outside of your genitals with plain water. Avoid using vaginal douches, because they might affect natural balance and thus worsen infections.

  4. Do NOT insert any foreign object Avoid putting any unusual object into your vagina as it can increase the risk of vaginal infections and pelvic inflammation. Additionally, do NOT wear overly tight underwear.

What Medication is Used for Green Discharge Treatment?

Green discharge is caused by a sexually transmitted infection. Therefore, both you and your partner must receive treatment. Recommended medications include:

  1. Metronidazole

  2. Tinidazole


The dosage and duration of medication

are at the discretion of the doctor 
Avoid drinking alcohol
while receiving medications.

Is Green Discharge Harmful?

It is harmful for patients with green discharge who failed to receive proper treatment, as it might lead to more severe complications. Generally green discharge indicates a vaginal parasitic infection, which is a sexually transmitted infection that disperses easily.  It can also cause inflammation and infections in the vagina and pelvis.

Some patients also suffer cervical inflammation, causing the vulva to look swollen with red spots like a strawberry, which is called Strawberry cervix. Some experience bleeding after sex. For pregnant women, this type of infection can increase the risk of preterm labor and early water breaking.
