Why do I need lab and physical exams before taking PrEP?

  • Because PrEP contains similar but not identical drugs to HIV medications, it is necessary to assess the patient’s labs to determine if they are already HIV-positive before taking the drug.

  • If a patient is unaware that they are HIV-positive and starts taking PrEP, the HIV infection will become drug-resistant and more difficult to treat than in general HIV patients, or may become so severe that it cannot be cured.
